Family Traditions

Hi all! Here is a list of traditions that were tossed around that each family does. I hope you get some ideas to start with your family :) There are even some ideas listed for going and seeing Christmas lights!

* Elf on the Shelf
* Felt Nativity Advent Calendar
* Family Life-what God wants for Christmas box
* Nativity in each child's rooms
* Christmas Box-put something in each day
* Special Ornament with special meaning of the year
* Zona Rosa: Carriage rides $5
* Birthday cake for Jesus
* Kids stamp the back of cards
* Pray over cards, especially for those not saved
* Advent Devotional- The Jessie Tree
* Polar Express
* Picture ornaments- put date and names on back
* Family acts out Christmas story
* Light ceremony- they say "lights" and they all come on
* Fondue- takes a long time, but it gives time to talk and enjoy one another
* Writing things down you want to start
* Decorated themed trees in each room
* Special pajamas
* Read the Christmas Story
* Open a gift on Christmas Eve
* Christmas cookies for breakfast
* Star Christmas tree topper from Christmases past
* Emanuel Baptist Church, 103rd and Metcalf- light show that lights up with music
* Christmas in the Park at Longview Lake in Lee's Summit
* Pajama Ride- where you get the kids all ready for bed and at the last second announce they need to get in the car. Head out for a ride around the neighborhood and look at all the twinkling Christmas lights.
* Decorate for Christmas the day after Thanksgiving
* White Elephant Gift Exchange for family, but with good gifts
* Read story of 10 lepers in Bible on Thanksgiving
* Take a family picture on Thanksgiving every year
* Make reindeer food with oatmeal and glitter to sprinkle on yard
* Lighting ceremony for the house along the line of the Plaza lighting ceremony
* At Thanksgiving, list three things that you aren't thankful for (dishes, laundry, etc) and flip them to blessings (thankful for food to eat, clothes to wear, etc)
* Wrap a baby doll to be Jesus with burlap and raffia and put the doll under the tree with a tag that says "the best gift of Christmas"
* String popcorn and cranberries for the tree and watch Christmas Vacation
* No electricity on Thanksgiving-grill food, play games, use candles
* Christmas Pickle: after all gifts are opened on Christmas, everyone goes to separate rooms while one person hides the pickle in the tree. Whoever finds it, gets something special
* December activity jar: write all the things you wan to do in December on slips of paper and put them in a jar to draw one each day (examples: watch Polar Express and pop popcorn, drive through Plaza to see the lights, play a fun game)
*Santa Bag: Get a great big Santa bag and a little something for everyone to put in it (example-CD). Arrange for a neighbor to drop it off, ring the bell and run away so the kids think Santa left it.
* Sew a new charm on each family member's stocking each year that represents something special from that year.
